The family spent the weekend at my parents house at the Jersey Shore. The main purpose was to assemble the new outdoor furniture which surprisingly went together with ease. Usually stuff like this turns out to be an all day project. Lucked out this time around.
It was a cloudy day with some afternoon showers but the skies cleared and the sun came out which made it a perfect evening for some fishing. The beach was deserted, I counted one couple stroll by walking near the waters edge. Her feet in the water and he wanted no part of it. I found out why on my first cast, the water was bone chilling on my bare feet, instant numbness. My handy infrared thermometer read a chilly 53 deg. F. and the strong winds made it feel colder.
Not ready for prime time with a fly rod for the surf just yet I brought along my medium action pole and spin casting reel which is great for the beach. Maybe this Summer I will pick up a fly rod for the surf. I was throwing a Deadly Dick lure and a few cheaper imitations but no bluefish hits would occur this evening. It’s a great feeling in N.J. to be fishing on an empty beach in such a congested state. Maybe the weather or cost of everything has kept people away. Another guy showed up later and set up a few poles with bait as I was leaving. Maybe he had some luck with a striped bass or two?
Definitely a nice way to spend a few hours on a Saturday night. The wife and kids found a $1.25 with the metal detector and casting into the ocean is also very cool. I am not talking about the water temp either. Burr…
