Fishing in small ponds is always an adventure even when the fish are not on the end of the line. Whether it is frogs jumping and making that squeak noise, turtles catching the suns rays on a lazy afternoon or this big guy that buzzed around before landing at my feet in the water.

This fly spent a few moments buzzing on the waters surface before slowly moving to the small log and climbing up to take a break, then proceeded to fly off to a large tree overhead. This made me rethink my presentation of my top water poppers, most times I work them way to fast.

Heres a cool website I came across for NJ Dragonflies and Damselflies. http://www.njodes.com/default.htm
Something to think about: The game 5 comeback win by the Red Sox’s the other night was the second largest in postseason history. The first one was in 1929, we all knew what happened that year.

Fished a local reservoir a few Sundays back, found myself in a really nice spot, all by my lonesome. Not a soul in sight, only the gentle popping noise on the surface of the water. Thinking how nice it was until well you know the rest of the story.
First that ever slight sound in the distance, as I am standing knee deep in water, now with a blank stare, wondering whats next. A small crowd comes matching through the hole in the woods, a few guys, kids, chairs, stopping a stone throw away. Positive this happens to all of us one time or another. I decided to pack it in and head back to the car.
Eighty five degrees in September, can’t really blame around who wants to get outside, but do you have to set up camp so close? At least the kids were out which is always a good thing.

This guy did not seem to mind one bit!

Well last weekend I had big ideas for some local fishing. As usual it did not go according to my plans for Friday night top water popping at a local pond. By the time my day job finished, eat some take out, and than cracked a beer, that was it.
The weekend was not totally lost, Saturday morning was well the usually Saturday stuff I do. But by 4:00 in the afternoon was on the G.S.P. south to exit 98, first cast 7:30, ocean temp a warm 73 degrees. Just a wonderful feeling as the calm water rolls over your feet. Thinking to myself, even if I don’t catch a thing tonight it really doesn’t matter. The setting was just perfect. With that said I was not going easy of the fishing side, went straight for the Deadly Dick Lure when it was time to tie one on the spin casting pole. I love the way this lure casts, like a speeding bullet, and the fish like it to.
Over an hour later with the stars shinning bright overhead, ended up with one fish to my credit, a decent size Sea Robin. It was a very nice night to be on the waters. No fluke or blues but that’s OK.

The boat drifts above it all in effortless silence, like a hot-air balloon. The sense of remoteness is absolute. Staring overboard with no other reference point but the river, you can easily persuade yourself that the boat is motionless and the river slipping backward beneath you.

Where has the Summer gone? Sure I might be jumping the gun you could say but with the ever so slight change in the Weather, cooler mornings, crickets chirping, Summer is starting to wind down. Its great sleeping weather, hard to roll out of bed. The Labor Day weekend is almost here, school supplies in the stores and football on the tube. Watching tv at night with all the ads for the new fall season, I use to hate that when I was a kid, that ment one thing, the start of SCHOOL.
Well with all that out of the way I consider this time the best overall for fishing. Especially if you live in the NJ area, the fishing kicks into overdrive. The warm water bass and panfish are doing there thing, I love em on top taking a fly. Tomorrow night I have a date planned at a local pond.

Down the Garden State Parkway the saltwater beach action with fluke and snapper blues has been hot according to The Fisherman Magazine. That is where I want to be Saturday evening. A few casts in the bay with a clouser minnow would be a bonus.
Yes fishing is on my mind this weekend. Lets hope it works out!

The Library is a wonderful resource for fly fishing books. A couple hundred book titles are available under fly fishing and tying alone. Here in New Jersey you can access all the Libraries combined and see what is available over the Internet, place orders and pick up in your town Library.
Last week went fishing for Small mouth in a local river and decided to learn more about these powerful guys, that’s where the Library helped me out. Picked up a copy of Small mouth Strategies for the Fly Rod by Will Ryan.
Check out your local Library for some good Summertime reading, and save a few bucks instead of buying at the same time. I also notice a few brand new releases that I will be looking to get my hands on down the road.
